Using Your MIGHTY Team to Relax at Work

Here is one idea for using your MIGHTY team to reduce stress at work:

  • Step 1 Schedule a Break Together -- Before the work day begins, go over your schedule with teammates.  Is there a time that you can schedule a break with one or some of your teammates?  Even if you can't do it at the same time, you can each commit to taking a stress reduction break at a particular time that day.  Each person should put it in their calendar.

  • Step 2 Breathe -- When your relaxation break comes, begin with deep breathing.  You can also try some visulaization at this time as well.

  • Step 3 Move -- At minimum, get up and stretch.  Try progressive muscle relaxation. Or take a walk, even for a couple minutes, around the block or to another part of the building. Look at the sky, even if it's just through a window.

  • Step 4 Write -- Let your friends know that you kept your stress reduction appointment.  You can post online, or just pick up the phone and text a Note to your team.  Share with them the craziest, most frustrating, or funniest thing that has happened so far that day.  Sharing the stresses of the job with others can help drain their power over you.

Nudge, nudge – it’s not just the name of a classic Monty Python sketch.  How to nudge people in the direction of better choices is an important subject of academic research these days.

Your Work Team and a Year of Living Healthfully

Want to improve your own well-being and that of those you work with?  You can lead a MIGHTY team dedicated to a year of living healthfully.  You could, for example, bring 3 to 50 employees together into one team; or, if you’d like to bring together a larger group, you could create an Organization Page for your whole workplace and then create a team for each department.

What would a “Year of Living Healthfully” look like?

Reuters reports that an international study in three countries, involving 2,600 smokers, found that text-messaged support could double the odds of a person remaining cigarette-free for a year.

Post a Healthy Eating Idea for Your Location

Here's a simple way to help out your associates at the job: post a Journal on the healthy eating possibilities near where you work.  To make them easier to search, use this format for the title: "Healthy Eating at [Your Location]."

Don't know any good spots for healthy eating around your location?  Post a Journal asking for suggestions.  Or post your warnings on unhealthy eats -- like the drink you thought would be like icy coffee, but turned out to be more like a coffee milkshake.

As is often the way in psychological studies, by "people" we mean college students.  Nevertheless, these study results have the ring of truth.  A series of small experiments conducted by  Loran Nordgren of the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, showed that those who were most certain of their willpower -- who thought they didn't need any extra help resisting temptation -- were actually the most likely to succumb.
